Tutoring

Customized tutoring sessions to enhance success at school

With our tutorial program, we design a customized approach that meets the unique needs of each student. Whether the goal is to improve knowledge in a subject area, enhance study skills, or prepare for college entrance exams, our tutors provide individualized, results-oriented support.

Getting Started

We begin each tutorial relationship with an intake meeting, which is an open, round-table discussion that includes the student, the parent, and our director. Our first task is to create hope and generate confidence, and then to increase skills and independence. With new confidence and skills, performance in school will improve. Throughout the tutoring program, we host regular progress meetings with the tutor, the student, the parent and the director.

We ask that clients bring all school records and be prepared to discuss strengths, challenges, and interests in order to match the student with a tutor and assist in designing the goals of the program. If the tutoring program is related to in-school curriculum, we will liaise with the classroom teacher in the program design.

Three Tutoring Options

1. Academic Tutor

Focused on directly supplementing classroom coursework, academic tutors provide the following support for students:

  • Increase knowledge of the course subject and supplement what is being taught in the classroom

  • Enhance independent study skills

  • Inspire confidence and better student-teacher communication

2. Remedial Tutor

For the student who has experienced long-term struggles and general frustration in learning, we offer formal learning evaluations with our learning specialist or informal assessments from our tutoring staff. Our remedial tutoring program helps identify specific concerns and obstacles and develop practical strategies to successfully bring students up to speed.

This tutoring program aims to help students with the following:

  • Fill in the “Swiss cheese” holes in their basic skills and general knowledge

  • Increase reading comprehension skills to analyze and make sense of history, science and literature readings

  • Develop writing and skills students learn to brainstorm, create a mind-map or outline, organize their thinking about writing, and edit their essays

  • Learn note taking for history, science and math, and learn how to study these notes in a charting method

3. Academic Coach

We believe in the importance of arming students with the knowledge of “how to learn,” a strategies-based approach to academic success based on individual strengths and challenges.  Some students pick up strong study skills automatically as they move through school, while others need an extra boost to learn the methods for success.

As with our remedial tutoring, we offer a formal learning evaluation with our learning specialist or informal assessments from our tutoring staff. We guide students with creative strategies and encourage them to discover the approaches and techniques that best suit them.

In coaching sessions, our tutors will model and inspire students to reach for the next level of success by:

  • Truly understanding their individual learning styles

  • Self-advocating and articulating what works for them

  • Deepening their study and organizational skills

  • Helping them analyze each of their teacher’s teaching styles and planning how to capitalize on that information

  • Increasing their ability to play the game of school
